Sunsmart 5K Run

The SunSmart 5K is a Miller School of Medicine annual student-run event that brings together runners, spectators and the local dermatology community to raise awareness about sun safety and skin cancer. After the race dermatologists from the University of Miami and local dermatology community will provide free skin cancer screening and give informative presentations about sun safety and skin cancer.

Why is supporting this event worthwhile?

  • Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States
  • One in five Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer in their lifetime
  • Melanoma is the most common cancer among 25-29 year olds.
  • Skin cancer can be cured if caught early.

What do we hope to accomplish?

  • To educate the public about sun safety
  • To promote skin cancer awareness
  • To provide free skin cancer screening
  • To support skin cancer research
  • To save lives through early detection and treatment of skin cancer
